The Church of St Mary the Virgin

Sedgeford Church is part of the United Benefice of Bircham, Docking, Fring, Sedgeford and Stanhoe. Rev. Peter Cook is Rector of the Benefice.

There has been a church on this site for over 900 years. Before the Reformation, the Church was in the care of the Prior and Monks of Norwich Priory.

The church is of great architectural significance and is Grade 1 listed having many medieval wall paintings, which we are hoping to stabilise and refurbish.

The Chancel was shortened by half in 1780 as you can see from the position of the Priest's door which should be in the middle of the chancel wall.

By 1841, the church had become very neglected - the congregation had to use their umbrellas inside the church! Urgent repairs were needed and in 1882 the church was given a new roof, pews and furniture.

In recent times, from 2011 to 2016 the church underwent extensive restorations and improvements. Roofs and drains were repaired and replaced and a toilet and improved heating were put in to make the church building more comfortable and so, more easily usable for both our congregation and other community groups.

The church collectstinned and packaged foods plus toiletries for the Hunstanton Food Bank and there is a box inside the church if you would like to donate any items.
